Topic postpositions (hakkında, ile ilgili)

Talking "About" Things with "Hakkında"

To say "about" a topic in Turkish, use the postposition hakkında. It comes directly after the noun you are discussing.

We will read a comprehensive report about the economy.
Ekonomi hakkında kapsamlı bir rapor okuyacağız.
The media knows nothing about politics.
Medya siyaset hakkında hiçbir şey bilmiyor.

You will often see hakkında used with verbs of communication or thought, like speaking, reading, or asking questions.

What did the minister say about this rumor?
Bakan bu söylenti hakkında ne söyledi?

Another very common way to express "about" or "concerning" is ile ilgili (literally "related with"). It functions very similarly to hakkında, but is especially useful when linking a topic directly to another noun, such as "agenda items related to the economy" or "a rumor about the minister's resignation."

The agenda items related to the economy are very important.
Ekonomi ile ilgili gündem maddeleri çok önemli.
Is there a rumor related to the minister's resignation?
Bakanın istifası ile ilgili bir söylenti var mı?

"Regarding" with "-A Dair"

For a slightly more formal or specific tone, you can use the postposition dair to mean "regarding" or "concerning." Unlike the previous two postpositions, dair requires the preceding noun to take the dative case suffix (-e, -a, -ye, or -ya).

There is no new item on the agenda regarding the economy.
Gündemde ekonomiye dair yeni bir madde yok.
The journalists asked the minister questions regarding the resignation.
Gazeteciler bakana istifaya dair sorular sordu.
