Reported present continuous (-Iyormuş)

The Reported Present Continuous: -(I)yormuş

To talk about ongoing actions or current situations that you haven't seen firsthand but heard about from someone else—like sharing news or workplace gossip—combine the present continuous suffix (-Iyor) with the reported past suffix (-muş).

Because the continuous suffix always contains the fixed vowel o in -yor, the reported suffix that follows will always be -muş (never -miş, -müş, or -mış).

Negative Reported Continuous

To state that you heard someone is not currently doing something, use the negative present continuous ending -(I)mıyor followed by -muş.

I heard the boss is not giving him a raise because he doesn't work much.
Patron ona zam vermiyormuş çünkü çok çalışmıyormuş.

Asking Questions

When asking for updates on a situation using question words like neden (why), the sentence structure remains standard and the verb takes the usual -(I)yormuş ending.

Why is the manager reportedly getting fired today?
Müdür bugün neden işten kovuluyormuş?
Why is the man reportedly cheating on his wife?
Adam eşini neden aldatıyormuş?

Connecting Ideas

You will often hear -(I)yormuş paired with conjunctions like bu yüzden (for this reason) or bu nedenle (therefore) to relay the full story about cause and effect when sharing updates.

I heard she is getting promoted next year, that's why she is not asking for a raise now.
