Reported conditionals and wishes (-saymış)

Gossiping About Regrets: The Reported Conditional

Turkish allows you to combine the conditional suffix (-sa / -se) with the inferential copula (-mış / -miş) to talk about hypothetical situations based on hearsay. This is the perfect structure for gossiping about other people's regrets or missed opportunities.

To form this, take the verb stem, add the conditional suffix, attach the buffer letter -y-, and follow it with the inferential suffix. For negative verbs, insert the negative suffix (-ma / -me) before the conditional.

Since gossip is usually about a third party ("he," "she," or "they"), this lesson focuses on the third-person singular forms: -saymış and -seymiş.

Reported Wishes with "Keşke"

When paired with keşke (if only / I wish), this structure expresses a reported regret. Instead of a direct "I wish he had done that," it translates to "I hear he wishes he had..." or "Apparently she regrets not..."

I hear he wishes he had paid a little attention to his father's advice.
Keşke babasının nasihatine biraz aldırış etseymiş.
I hear he wishes he hadn't acted so angry at the meeting.
Keşke toplantıda o kadar sinirli davranmasaymış.
I hear she wishes she had opened that shop and become the boss of her own business.
Keşke o dükkânı açsaymış da kendi işinin patronu olsaymış.

Hearsay Conditionals: "They say if he had..."

You can also use -saymış to set up a reported "if" clause. When discussing how things could have gone differently for someone else, the condition clause uses -saymış, and the result clause uses the reported aorist (-ırmış / -armış for affirmative, or -mazmış for negative).

This neatly translates to: "Rumor has it if he had [condition], he would have [result]."

They say if he had studied more for the exam, he would have gotten into that university.
Sınava daha çok çalışsaymış, o üniversiteyi kazanırmış.
Rumor has it if he had bought a plot of land with that money instead of being wasteful, he would be very rich.
Savurganlık yapmak yerine o parayla bir arsa alsaymış, çok zengin olurmuş.
They say if he had checked the address on the map, he wouldn't have gotten lost in the forest.
Adresi haritadan kontrol etseymiş, ormanda kaybolmazmış.
