Questions with 'to be' (mısın, mıyım)

To ask someone directly about their feelings, states, or professions, attach personal "to be" endings (like "I" or "you") directly to the yes/no question particle.

The personal ending will always harmonize with the vowel of the question particle (, mi, mu, or ).

Asking "Are you...?" (Sen)

To ask a single person "Are you...?" informally, attach the second-person singular suffix (-sın, -sin, -sun, -sün) to the question particle.

  • a / ımısın
  • e / imisin
  • o / umusun
  • ö / ümüsün
Are you hungry now?
Şimdi aç mısın?
Are you a police officer?
Sen polis misin?

Asking "Am I...?" (Ben)

When adding the first-person singular suffix (-ım, -im, -um, -üm) to the question particle, you must insert the buffer letter y to prevent two vowels from bumping into each other.

  • a / ımıyım
  • e / imiyim
  • o / umuyum
  • ö / ümüyüm
Am I the manager now?
Ben şimdi müdür müyüm?

Formal and Plural "Are you...?" (Siz)

When speaking to multiple people or addressing someone formally, use the plural/formal suffix (-sınız, -siniz, -sunuz, -sünüz) on the question particle.

Are you married?
Evli misiniz?
Are you the new manager?
Siz yeni müdür müsünüz?

Third Person

Remember that the third person ("he", "she", "it", or specific nouns) does not take a personal suffix. Just use the standalone question particle that harmonizes with the word right before it.

Is that child full?
O çocuk tok mu?
Is that young woman a police officer?
Şu genç kadın polis mi?
