Logical Conclusions with "Demek ki"
When you observe a clue and draw a logical conclusion from it, you can connect your observation and your deduction using the conjunction demek ki.
Literally translating to "it means that," demek ki functions much like "so" or "therefore" in English. You will usually place it right after the evidence and right before the conclusion you've reached.
| His attitude is very obvious, so it means he is angry at us. | Tavrı çok belli, demek ki bize kızgın. |
| He is constantly smiling, so it means he is implying something secret. | Sürekli gülümsüyor, demek ki gizli bir şey ima ediyor. |
Assumptions and Appearances
When piecing together local rumors, you won't always have hard facts. In these cases, you can state what seems to be true using anlaşılan (apparently / as is understood) or express what you are guessing with the verb varsaymak (to assume).
| Apparently he is not listening to us; he is just assuming. | Anlaşılan bizi dinlemiyor, sadece varsayıyor. |
Doubts and Contradictions
If the social clues you are gathering do not add up, you might encounter a çelişki (contradiction). When clues are yanıltıcı (misleading), it is natural to become şüpheci (skeptical).
Notice how demek ki is used here to deduce the root cause of these doubts:
| He is a skeptical person, so it means this contradiction disturbs him. | O şüpheci bir insan, demek ki bu çelişki onu rahatsız ediyor. |
| This clue is very misleading, so it means the truth is not clear. | Bu ipucu çok yanıltıcı, demek ki gerçek belli değil. |
Sensing the Truth
As you evaluate the evidence, you will look for a valid gerekçe (justification) and try to sezmek (sense) people's true intentions.
By combining your observations with demek ki, you can finally get to the bottom of the story or clearly state your assumptions.
| Apparently this document is misleading, so it means he lied to the boss. | Anlaşılan bu belge yanıltıcı, demek ki patrona yalan söylemiş. |
| He has no valid justification, so it means he sensed the danger. | Geçerli bir gerekçesi yok, demek ki tehlikeyi sezmiş. |
| It means he is busy, we assume so. | Demek ki o meşgul, öyle varsayıyoruz. |
