Just as / As (-dığı gibi)

To express that an action happens "as" or "just as" someone planned, said, or hoped, use the -dığı gibi structure.

Add the personal participle suffix (-dık, -dik, -duk, or -dük) to a verb stem, add a possessive ending, and follow it with gibi (like/as). Since most possessive endings start with a vowel, the k typically softens to ğ.

First and Second Person

Here is how the structure looks when the subject of the clause is "I", "you", or "we". The possessive suffix indicates who is performing the action.

The event did not go at all as I had hoped.
Etkinlik hiç umduğum gibi geçmedi.
We arranged to go to the cinema just as you wanted.
İstediğin gibi sinemaya gitmek için sözleştik.
As we agreed yesterday, we are meeting tomorrow morning.
Dün kararlaştırdığımız gibi, yarın sabah buluşuyoruz.

Third Person

When the subject is a specific noun (like "the boss"), it takes the genitive case (e.g., patronun). Use the third-person possessive ending on the participle.

We carried out the project just as the boss explained.
Patronun açıkladığı gibi projeyi gerçekleştirdik.
We are clarifying the problem just as the president reported to us.
Problemi, başkanın bize bildirdiği gibi netleştiriyoruz.

Exact Matches and the "They" Form

To emphasize that something happened exactly or just as planned, place the word tam right before the phrase.

When the subject is "they" (onlar), the possessive ending is -ları or -leri. Because this suffix starts with a consonant, the k in the participle does not soften—it remains -dıkları or -dikleri.

The machine worked flawlessly, exactly as he hoped.
Makine tam onun umduğu gibi kusursuz çalıştı.
They are reporting the change to us exactly as they discussed.
Değişikliği tam konuştukları gibi bize bildiriyorlar.
