Indefinite determiner (herhangi bir)

Expressing "Any" with "Herhangi bir"

When you want to say "any", "any whatsoever", or "whichever" in Turkish, you use the indefinite determiner herhangi bir. It is extremely useful for general inquiries, especially at customer service desks.

To use it, simply place herhangi bir directly before a singular noun. Notice that unlike English, which sometimes pairs "any" with plural nouns (like "any questions" or "any problems"), Turkish always keeps the noun singular.

Is there any problem?
Herhangi bir problem var mı?
Any branch is suitable.
Herhangi bir şube uygun.

Adding Case Markers and Adjectives

The noun following herhangi bir behaves normally in the sentence. It can take case markers (like the locative "in/at" or dative "to"), and it can be followed by postpositions.

Is there an information desk at any branch?
Herhangi bir şubede danışma var mı?
I want to speak with any official.
Herhangi bir yetkili ile görüşmek istiyorum.

If you want to add an adjective to describe the noun, place the adjective directly after herhangi bir and before the noun.

The customer does not have any new request.
Müşterinin herhangi bir yeni talebi yok.

You will also frequently hear this determiner used in conditions and general rules, such as when a clerk explains a store policy or warranty.
