Both... And: Hem... hem...
To include two options, use hem... hem... (both... and...). Simply place hem before each word or phrase you are joining. It works with nouns, adjectives, and verbs.
| This coat is both stylish and high-quality. | Bu kaban hem şık hem kaliteli. |
| The man is buying both a leather bag and a belt. | Adam hem deri çanta hem kemer alıyor. |
| There are both socks and hats in this store. | Bu mağazada hem çorap hem şapka var. |
Neither... Nor: Ne... ne...
To exclude two choices, use ne... ne... (neither... nor...). Place ne in front of both items.
Important: When using ne... ne..., the verb must be grammatically positive. Because the conjunction itself makes the sentence negative, Turkish avoids double negatives.
| That dress is neither cheap nor stylish. | O elbise ne ucuz ne şık. |
Notice how the verb kullanıyorum (I use) is positive, but the sentence translates to "I use neither...":
| I use neither a tie nor a belt. | Ben ne kravat ne kemer kullanıyorum. |
| The woman is buying neither a leather belt nor a coat. | Kadın ne deri kemer ne kaban alıyor. |
Using Conjunctions with Suffixes
If the items you are linking require a case ending, such as the dative or accusative case, you must attach that suffix to both items.
| This color looks good on both the man and the woman. | Bu renk hem adama hem kadına yakışıyor. |
| The student is choosing both the cotton shirt and the tie. | Öğrenci hem pamuk gömleği hem kravatı seçiyor. |
