Chain Noun Compounds
In Turkish, you can link three or more nouns to form highly descriptive phrases, known as chain noun compounds (zincirleme isim tamlaması). They combine multiple noun compounds together, often nesting a general concept with a specific owner.
There are two main patterns depending on which words group together.
Pattern 1: [Noun 1 + Noun 2] + Noun 3
When the first two nouns form a fixed concept (like "university rector"), that entire concept becomes the "owner" of the third noun (like "secretary").
To form this, add the genitive case to the end of the first compound, and the possessive suffix to the third noun. Because the second noun already has its own possessive suffix from the first compound, you must use the buffer consonant -n- before adding the genitive suffix.
- [Noun 1]
- [Noun 2]-(s)i-nin + [Noun 3]-(s)i
| The university rector's secretary is very tired today. | Üniversite rektörünün sekreteri bugün çok yorgun. |
| The students waited for the decision of the faculty administration. | Öğrenciler fakülte yönetiminin kararını bekledi. |
Pattern 2: Noun 1 + [Noun 2 + Noun 3]
When a specific owner possesses a general concept (like "the university's" + "computer system"), the grouping changes. The first noun takes the genitive suffix, the second noun is bare, and the third noun takes the possessive suffix.
- [Noun 1]-(n)in + [Noun 2]
- [Noun 3]-(s)i
| The university's computer system broke down yesterday. | Üniversitenin bilgisayar sistemi dün bozuldu. |
| The rector entered the institute's archive room. | Rektör, enstitünün arşiv odasına girdi. |
Adding Case Markers to Chains
Just like simple noun compounds, the final noun in a chain can take case markers if the sentence requires it (such as the locative "in/at", the dative "to", or the accusative for direct objects).
Because the final noun always ends with a third-person possessive suffix, you must insert the buffer consonant -n- before adding any case suffix.
| All of the students waited in the faculty's meeting hall. | Öğrencilerin hepsi fakültenin toplantı salonunda bekledi. |
| Did the dean examine the archive of the management board? | Dekan, yönetim kurulunun arşivini inceledi mi? |
| Would you attend the meeting of the institute board? | Enstitü kurulunun toplantısına katılır mısınız? |
