To express that you cannot stop yourself from doing something—like smelling an irresistible fragrance—Turkish uses a double-negative structure that translates to "cannot help but do."

This is formed by combining the negative converb **-madan / -meden** (without doing) with a verb of inability: either **duramamak** (to be unable to stop) or **edememek** (to be unable to do).

### The Negative Converb (-madan / -meden)

First, add **-madan** (back vowels) or **-meden** (front vowels) to the verb stem you cannot resist. This creates an adverb meaning "without doing."

- **koklamak** (to smell) -> **koklamadan** (without smelling)
- **harmanlamak** (to blend) -> **harmanlamadan** (without blending)

### Using "duramamak"

Follow the converb with **duramamak** (from **durmak**, to stop/stay, plus the ability suffix **-a** and negative suffix **-ma**). 

This literally means "to be unable to stop without doing," capturing the psychological inability to resist an action. Conjugate **duramamak** for subject and tense; the **-madan** verb remains unchanged.

### Using "edememek"

You can also use the auxiliary verb **etmek** (to do). With the ability and negative suffixes, it becomes **edememek** (to be unable to do). 

The structure **-madan edememek** is identical in meaning to **-madan duramamak**.
