Asking "What" with Ne
When you want to know what an object or animal is, you use the question word ne (what). In Turkish, you do not need to rearrange the sentence to form a basic question. You simply put the question word where the answer would go.
Combined with the demonstrative pronouns (bu, şu, o), asking "What is this?" or "What is that?" is incredibly simple:
| What is this? | Bu ne? |
| This is a house. | Bu bir ev. |
| What is that over there? | O ne? |
| That over there is a book. | O bir kitap. |
Asking "Who" with Kim
To ask about people, use the question word kim (who). Just like with ne, you pair it directly with the pronoun or the person you are asking about.
| Who is this? | Bu kim? |
| This is a child. | Bu bir çocuk. |
You can also use kim to ask about a specific person by pointing them out. To do this, place the pointing word (bu, şu, or o) right before the person, followed by kim.
| Who is that man over there? | O adam kim? |
| That man over there is a student. | O adam bir öğrenci. |
