In Turkish, you can describe the manner or way an action is performed by turning a verb into a noun with the suffix -(y)Iş.
Follow 4-way vowel harmony, adding the buffer -y- if the verb root ends in a vowel:
- bakmak (to look) -> bakış (gaze / look)
- durmak (to stand) -> duruş (stance / posture)
- gülmek (to laugh/smile) -> gülüş (smile)
- yürümek (to walk) -> yürüyüş (way of walking)
Because these are standard nouns, they take possessive and case suffixes just like any other noun. This is especially useful when evaluating someone's body language or attitude during a job interview (mülakat).
| I need to evaluate the candidate's posture for the interview. | Mülakat için adayın duruşunu değerlendirmem lazım. |
| This candidate's gaze is very impressive. | Bu adayın bakışı çok etkileyici. |
| His relaxed way of sitting shows self-confidence. | Onun rahat oturuşu özgüven gösteriyor. |
| He has a nervous smile and his hands are trembling. | Gergin bir gülüşü var ve elleri titriyor. |
| A calm way of walking is very important for the interview. | Mülakat için sakin bir yürüyüş çok önemli. |
You can also attach this suffix to reflexive verbs. For example, giyinmek is "to dress oneself", so giyiniş means "manner of dressing".
| I want to evaluate this candidate's manner of dressing. | Bu adayın giyinişini değerlendirmek istiyorum. |
