Questions & Answers about ทราย กระสอบ ละ เท่าไร ครับ
Why do we use เท่าไร (how much) instead of กี่ (how many) when asking about sacks?
Because we are asking for the price of the sand, which is an open amount. If you wanted to ask 'how many sacks of sand do you need?', you would use the countable word กี่ and say ทรายกี่กระสอบ.
How exactly does the word ละ work to mean 'per'? Where does it go in a sentence?
The word ละ is placed directly after a unit of measurement or time to mean 'per' or 'each'. Since กระสอบ means 'sack', กระสอบละ translates to 'per sack'. The pattern is always Unit + ละ.
Why is the sentence ordered as 'sand - sack - per - how much'?
Thai sentences often establish the main topic first. You start with the item you are asking about (ทราย - sand), follow with the unit of measurement (กระสอบละ - per sack), and put the question word (เท่าไร - how much) at the end.
Is กระสอบ a regular noun or a measure word (classifier) in this sentence?
It is acting as a measure word here. Like many container words in Thai, such as cups or boxes, กระสอบ (sack) can be used both as a physical object and as the unit of measurement for whatever is poured inside it.
