Why is ให้ used here instead of just putting แม่ directly after the verb ส่ง?
In English, you can say 'send my mother a parcel', but Thai does not use that word order. You need the benefactive verb ให้ to show who is receiving the action or the benefit. It acts like 'to' or 'for'. So ส่ง พัสดุ ให้ แม่ literally translates to 'send parcel give mother'.
Does ให้ แม่ mean I am sending the parcel to my mother, or sending it for her (on her behalf)?
Without extra context, it can actually mean both! ให้ can indicate that your mother is the recipient (the parcel is going to her house), or that you are doing her a favor (she asked you to mail a parcel for her). Usually, the situation makes it obvious which one you mean.
Why do we use ที่ before ไปรษณีย์?
In this sentence, ที่ acts as the preposition 'at' to indicate a location (ที่ ไปรษณีย์ means 'at the post office'). You might remember ที่ from earlier lessons where it means 'that' or 'which', but when placed directly before a place, it means 'at'.
Does the location (ที่ ไปรษณีย์) always have to go at the very end of the sentence?
While putting the location at the end is the most standard and natural word order, Thai is quite flexible. You could also put ที่ ไปรษณีย์ at the very beginning of the sentence if you wanted to emphasize where the action is happening.
The spelling of ไปรษณีย์ looks complicated. How is it pronounced and are all those letters spoken?
It is pronounced 'prai-sa-nii'. The final letter ย has a cancellation mark over it (called a karan), which means it is completely silent. The unusual letters ษ (an 's' sound) and ณ (an 'n' sound) are used because this is a formal word borrowed from Sanskrit.
