Why is there a การ in front of the word พูด (to speak)?
The word การ is a prefix used to turn verbs into nouns. Because "speaking" is the subject of this sentence, we add การ to the verb พูด to create การพูด (the act of speaking). It works just like adding "-ing" to a verb in English to make it a noun.
Why does the sentence say ภาษาไทย (language Thai) instead of the other way around?
In Thai, describing words and modifiers always come after the main noun. So instead of saying "Thai language" like in English, you say the noun ภาษา (language) first, followed by the specific type ไทย (Thai).
There is no word for "is" in this sentence. Why not?
In English, we say "Is speaking Thai difficult?". But in Thai, you don't use a "to be" verb (like "is" or "are") before adjectives. You simply place the adjective ยาก (difficult) directly after what you are describing.
If ไหม already makes it a question, why do we need คะ at the end?
ไหม is the word that turns the sentence into a yes/no question, while คะ is a particle added by female speakers to make the sentence polite. Note that for questions, female speakers use คะ (pronounced with a high tone), whereas for normal statements, they use ค่ะ (pronounced with a falling tone).
