Thai's Noun Factory
Thai builds nouns out of verbs with two prefixes — and once you know them, whole families of words unlock at once.
การ- (kaan-) attaches to ACTION verbs and names the activity:

ความ- (khwaam-) attaches to STATIVE verbs — the adjective-like verbs from the very start of this course — and names the abstract quality:

You have met this pattern already without being told: การบ้าน (homework) and ความจริง (truth) are both built this way.

Two Rules
- การ- takes DOINGS, ความ- takes BEINGS. การเรียน studying but ความร้อน heat — swap them and the word is wrong.
- The prefixes are BOUND: การ and ความ never stand alone with these meanings. That is why they never appeared in your vocabulary as words — they are word-building parts.
The same trick with people: นัก- makes a doer-noun (นักเรียน — student, the one who studies). You will meet more of the นัก- and ผู้- families as the course goes on.
