Why is อะไร (what) at the end of the sentence instead of the beginning?
In Thai, question words like อะไร (what) and ใคร (who) don't move to the front of the sentence like they do in English. Instead, they stay in the exact same spot where the answer will go. Since the answer comes after the verb (Student listens to [music]), the question word goes there too: นักเรียน ฟัง อะไร (Student listens [to] what?).
The English translation says "listening to". Where is the word for "to" in Thai?
You don't need one! The Thai verb ฟัง covers the whole meaning of "to listen to" all by itself. Adding an extra preposition before อะไร would sound unnatural.
How do we know this means "is listening" and not "listens"?
It could actually mean either! Thai verbs don't change their form to show time or continuous actions like "-ing" in English. You just rely on the context of the conversation to know if the student is listening right now or in general.
Would I say ครับ if I am a woman asking this question?
No, ครับ is the polite ending particle used by male speakers. If you are female, you would swap it out for the female question particle คะ and ask นักเรียน ฟัง อะไร คะ instead.
