Questions & Answers about ใคร อ่าน จดหมาย ครับ
Why is ใคร at the beginning of the sentence if Thai question words usually go at the end?
In Thai, question words sit exactly where the answer would go in a normal sentence. Because we want to know the subject (the person doing the reading), ใคร goes at the beginning, exactly where the person's name will go when someone answers the question.
The English translation says 'is reading'. Where is the word for 'is' in the Thai sentence?
Thai verbs like อ่าน do not change form to show time, and they do not need helper verbs like 'is' or 'are'. Depending on the situation, อ่าน can mean 'read', 'reads', or 'is reading'.
Does จดหมาย mean a piece of mail, or a letter of the alphabet?
จดหมาย means a letter that you write and send in the mail. If you are talking about a letter of the alphabet (like A, B, or C), you would use a completely different word: ตัวอักษร.
How would a female speaker ask this question?
She would say ใคร อ่าน จดหมาย คะ. The word ครับ is a polite particle used by male speakers. Female speakers use คะ at the end of questions to be polite.
