Why is อะไร (what) at the end of the sentence instead of the beginning?
In Thai, question words usually stay in the exact same spot where the answer would go. If the answer is 'I am writing a book', the question is phrased as 'You are writing what?'. This is why อะไร comes right after the verb เขียน (to write).
The translation says 'are writing', but I don't see words for 'are' or '-ing'. How do we know it's happening right now?
Thai verbs don't change their spellings for time, so there is no '-ing' ending. เขียน can mean write, writes, wrote, or writing. In a simple sentence like this, context usually tells us it's happening right now. You could add กำลัง (currently) before the verb to be extra clear, but it's completely normal to leave it out!
Can I put the polite word ครับ before the question word อะไร?
No, polite particles like ครับ (used by male speakers) and คะ / ค่ะ (used by female speakers) always go at the very end of the sentence. They must come after the question word.
