Why does ทำ อาหาร mean cooking when ทำ just means to make or do?
In Thai, everyday actions are often expressed by combining a general verb with a noun. ทำ means to make or do, and อาหาร means food. Putting them together to literally say making food is the standard way to say cooking!
The English translation says I am cooking, but there is no word for am or -ing here. Why?
How can I use the question word ใคร (who) to ask Who is cooking?
Thai question words sit exactly where the answer goes. Since the answer here is the subject ผม (I), you just replace it with ใคร (who). The question becomes ใคร ทำ อาหาร ครับ (Who makes food?).
If I want to ask What are you cooking? using อะไร (what), where does it go?
To ask what someone is making, you replace the specific object อาหาร (food) with the question word อะไร (what). You would also change the pronoun to you, making the question คุณ ทำ อะไร ครับ (You make what?).
