Why isn't there a word for "the" before กล่อง (box)?
Thai does not use articles like "a", "an", or "the". The word กล่อง can mean "box", "a box", "the box", or even "boxes" depending on the situation. We know it means "the box" here purely from the context. You will see กล่อง used a lot in this lesson as a reference point for prepositions like ใน (in) and บน (on)!
Does หา mean "to look for" or "to find"?
On its own, หา means the action of searching: "to look for". To say you actually succeeded in finding something, Thai usually uses a combination of words, often adding เจอ (to discover/meet). Because there is no เจอ in this sentence, the person is still in the process of looking for the box.
How does the sentence structure change to make this a question?
It doesn't! English changes the word order to make a question (shifting from "You are looking" to "Are you looking?"). Thai keeps the exact same Subject-Verb-Object order as a normal statement: คุณหากล่อง (You look for the box), and simply adds the yes/no question word ไหม at the end.
Does the polite particle ครับ at the end change if I am asking this to a woman?
No. Polite particles in Thai always match the gender of the speaker, not the listener. If you identify as male, you will use ครับ to be polite, no matter who you are talking to. If you identify as female, you would replace it with คะ.
