Questions & Answers about งาน กาล่า นี้ เป็น งาน ทรงเกียรติ อย่างยิ่ง ครับ
Why use อย่างยิ่ง instead of just มาก for 'extremely'?
อย่างยิ่ง is a highly formal degree modifier. While มาก (very/much) works in everyday speech, อย่างยิ่ง elevates the tone to match formal contexts, translating closer to 'highly' or 'extremely.' It is always placed directly after the stative verb or adjective it modifies.
What is the purpose of ทรง in the word ทรงเกียรติ?
เกียรติ is a noun meaning 'honor' or 'prestige.' The prefix ทรง (which literally means 'to hold' or 'maintain') is used to turn certain abstract nouns into formal adjectives, meaning 'possessing [that quality].' Therefore, ทรงเกียรติ means 'honorable' or 'prestigious.'
Why is the word งาน (event/work) repeated? Could we just say งานกาล่านี้เป็นทรงเกียรติ?
You cannot say เป็นทรงเกียรติ because เป็น (to be) must be followed by a noun, not an adjective. That is why the second งาน is needed: 'is an honorable event.' Alternatively, you could drop both เป็น and the second งาน to just use the adjective directly: งานกาล่านี้ทรงเกียรติอย่างยิ่ง (This gala is extremely prestigious).
Can อย่างยิ่ง be used to modify action verbs in formal speech, or only adjectives?
It is almost exclusively used to modify stative verbs (adjectives) or verbs expressing feelings and mental states (like ยินดี - to be pleased, or ขอบคุณ - to thank). You would not use อย่างยิ่ง to modify physical action verbs like walking or eating, no matter how formal the context is.
