Questions & Answers about ภาพวาด นี้ ไม่ค่อย สมจริง เท่าไหร่ ครับ
How do ไม่ค่อย and เท่าไหร่ work together in this sentence?
They act like a pair of bookends around the adjective สมจริง to soften a negative opinion. While ไม่สมจริง would sound blunt (not realistic), wrapping it in ไม่ค่อย... เท่าไหร่ changes the feeling to not particularly realistic or not that realistic. It makes the critique much more polite.
I recognize จริง (real/true), but what does สม do in the word สมจริง?
The word สม means suitable, matching, or deserving of. When you combine it with จริง, the literal meaning becomes matching reality. This is the standard Thai way to say something is realistic or plausible.
Could I just use ภาพ instead of ภาพวาด for this painting?
You could, but ภาพ on its own is a broad word for picture or image, which could easily be misunderstood as a photograph (ภาพถ่าย). Adding the verb วาด (to draw or paint) specifically clarifies that this is a painted or drawn image.
Why is เท่าไหร่ spelled with a tone mark here? I thought the dictionary spelling was เท่าไร.
You are right that เท่าไร is the officially correct spelling. However, in everyday speech, Thai people naturally say it with a low tone. Because of this, you will very often see it spelled as เท่าไหร่ in casual writing to match the actual spoken pronunciation. Both spellings act as the exact same softening particle in this sentence.
