Unfinished actions (ค้าง / ค้างไว้)

Leaving Things Unfinished

To describe a process that was paused, abandoned, or left running, place the resultative serial verb ค้างไว้ directly after an action verb. This indicates that the state of the action was left "hanging" or unfinished.

Careless Habits and Warnings

Because leaving things on or unfinished can be wasteful or dangerous, ค้างไว้ is frequently paired with warnings using words like ห้าม (to forbid / must not) or ไม่ควร (should not). This applies to physical appliances as well as digital habits.

Unfinished Business

The word ค้าง can also combine with other words to describe lingering things. For example, placing it after the word for work creates งานค้าง (a backlog or unfinished work).

To describe a problem or a feeling that remains pending or unresolved, use the related word ค้างคา.
