Unexpected probability (ดีไม่ดี)

Discussing the Tournament

When fans talk about sports matches, they often evaluate a team's or a striker's condition. In Thai, the English loanword ฟอร์ม is used to talk about a player's "form."

Favorites and Upsets

Tournaments are notoriously unpredictable. You will often hear fans debating the fate of the unexpected "dark horse" (ม้ามืด) versus the "top favorite" (เต็งหนึ่ง).

When a match defies all expectations, Thai uses the slang word พลิกล็อก (literally "to flip the lock") to mean "to cause an upset."

Unexpected Probability with ดีไม่ดี

When making bold predictions about extreme, surprising, or unexpected possibilities, Thai speakers use the conjunction ดีไม่ดี.

While it literally translates to "good, not good," when ดีไม่ดี is placed at the very beginning of a clause, it takes on the meaning of "chances are," "might even," or "it wouldn't be surprising if." It signals that something entirely unexpected is actually quite probable.

It is also very common to see ดีไม่ดี placed at the start of the clause while using the word for "might" or "may" (อาจจะ) right before the verb to slightly soften the bold prediction.
