Turning the topic (ล่ะ)

Turning the Topic with ล่ะ

A good conversation is like a game of tennis—you have to hit the ball back to your partner. When someone shares an update or asks a question, shift the focus back to them using the pragmatic particle ล่ะ.

what about / question particle softening a wh-question
ล่ะ

To ask "What about...?" or "And...?", place ล่ะ immediately after a noun or pronoun. It often appears at the end of a sentence, right before your polite gender particle (ครับ or ค่ะ).

Catching Up on Life and Work

When catching up, you might describe work as ลงตัว (settled) or share that a กิจการ (business) is รุ่งเรือง (prosperous). After sharing your update, use ล่ะ to ask for theirs.

Asking After News and Family

You can apply ล่ะ to any noun to ask about specific aspects of the listener's life, such as their ข่าวคราว (news) or ครอบครัว (family). When describing a close, loving family, Thai speakers often use the word อบอุ่น (warm).

Expressing Care and Well Wishes

Catching up is also a time to express care. Use ถามไถ่ (to ask after) when checking in on someone, especially when you are ผูกพัน (bonded) by a strong relationship. If someone has been working hard and you see how much they ทุ่มเท (dedicate themselves), you might wish for them to be สมหวัง (fulfilled).
