Emphasizing Past Actions with ได้
In Thai, verbs don't change form to show the past tense. While you can often rely on context or time words (like "yesterday"), you can also place ได้ directly before an action verb to emphasize that an event actually took place.
This structure can also express having the opportunity to do something, translating to "got to" in English.
| I was very excited because I got to go to the concert. | ฉัน ตื่นเต้น มาก เพราะ ได้ ไป คอนเสิร์ต ค่ะ |
| The artist already sang on the stage. | ศิลปิน ได้ ร้องเพลง บน เวที แล้ว ครับ |
| He also attended the cultural festival. | เขา ก็ ได้ เข้าร่วม เทศกาล วัฒนธรรม ครับ |
Use this structure in questions to ask if someone actually did or got to do an activity.
| Did you watch the cultural performance? | คุณ ได้ ดู การแสดง วัฒนธรรม ไหม คะ |
Counting Clothing with ตัว
When counting objects in Thai, you must use a specific "classifier" word in the following pattern: Noun + Number + Classifier.
For most items of clothing, such as a shirt (เสื้อ) or a skirt (กระโปรง), the classifier is ตัว.
| I bought two shirts at the concert. | ผม ได้ ซื้อ เสื้อ สอง ตัว ที่ คอนเสิร์ต ครับ |
When an adjective (like a color) is used, it directly follows the noun, keeping the number and classifier at the very end of the phrase.
| We have to use three red skirts on the stage. | เรา ต้อง ใช้ กระโปรง สี แดง สาม ตัว บน เวที ครับ |
| Yesterday I bought two new skirts to wear to the festival. | เมื่อวาน ฉัน ได้ ซื้อ กระโปรง ใหม่ สอง ตัว ใส่ ไป เทศกาล ค่ะ |
Describing the Atmosphere
When attending a cultural performance or event, you might want to describe the vibe. Use บรรยากาศ for "atmosphere" and เต็ม when a venue or room is "full."
| The atmosphere at the festival is very good. | บรรยากาศ ที่ เทศกาล ดี มาก ค่ะ |
| The room is already full, but the atmosphere is very fun. | ห้อง เต็ม แล้ว แต่ บรรยากาศ สนุก มาก ค่ะ |
