On the contrary (ซะอีก)

Sometimes you buy a cheap gadget and expect the worst, only to find out it works amazingly well. To express this kind of pleasant surprise, Thai uses the particle ซะอีก.

on the contrary / surprisingly (unexpectedly)
ซะอีก

Defying Expectations

Place ซะอีก at the end of a sentence to show that the reality is completely contrary to your initial evaluation.

Connecting Expectations and Reality

You will often see ซะอีก paired with แต่ (but). The first half of the sentence states the negative assumption or observation (like being cheap or looking old), and the second half reveals the surprisingly positive trait, capped off with ซะอีก.

This structure is great for reviewing tech items or services, like finding out that free Wi-Fi is unexpectedly stable (เสถียร).

Surprising Performance

You can also use it to praise the unexpected capability or performance (สมรรถนะ) of items that are surprisingly powerful for their size.

Surviving Accidents

ซะอีก is perfect for situations where a product survives a disaster. If you drop a device and it unexpectedly remains completely free of scratches (รอยขีดข่วน), the particle highlights your relief and surprise.

It works just as well when a machine you thought was broken ends up working perfectly to purify (ฟอก) the air.
