The Near-Miss Frame: เกือบจะ... อยู่แล้ว
To express that an action or event was on the verge of happening but ultimately did not, use the aspectual frame เกือบจะ... อยู่แล้ว.
Place เกือบจะ (almost) before the verb phrase, and complete the sentence with อยู่แล้ว (already). This structure is frequently used to talk about narrow escapes or mistakes you almost made.
| I almost forgot to save the file. | ผม เกือบ จะ ลืม เซฟ ไฟล์ อยู่ แล้ว |
Adding Emphasis with เชียว
To emphasize the emotion of the near-miss—such as shock, relief, or that it was on the very verge of happening—add the particle เชียว to the end of the frame.
You can also express that something almost didn't happen by inserting a negative word like ไม่ได้ immediately after เกือบจะ.
| I was on the very verge of not saving the work. | ผม เกือบ จะ ไม่ ได้ เซฟ งาน อยู่ แล้ว เชียว |
| She was on the very verge of deleting the important folder. | เธอ เกือบ จะ ลบ โฟลเดอร์ สำคัญ อยู่ แล้ว เชียว |
Digital Mishaps & English Loanwords
Digital terminology in Thai relies heavily on English loanwords. Words like แฮงก์ (to freeze/hang), รีเซ็ต (to reset), and ล็อกเอาต์ (to log out) function exactly like native Thai verbs and fit seamlessly into the near-miss frame.
| The computer almost froze! | คอมพิวเตอร์ เกือบ จะ แฮงก์ อยู่ แล้ว เชียว |
| We were on the very verge of resetting the system. | เรา เกือบ จะ รีเซ็ต ระบบ อยู่ แล้ว เชียว |
| He was on the very verge of logging out. | เขา เกือบ จะ ล็อกเอาต์ อยู่ แล้ว เชียว |
Using Tech Verbs in Everyday Instructions
These digital verbs are just as common in everyday instructions and observations.
| When the screen freezes, you have to reset the machine. | ตอนที่ หน้าจอ แฮงก์ ต้อง รีเซ็ต เครื่อง ครับ |
| You should block spam messages. | คุณ ควร บล็อก ข้อความ สแปม นะ คะ |
