Expressing Flexibility with ก็ได้
In Thai, you can create indefinite pronouns like "anyone," "anywhere," or "anytime" by placing ก็ได้ at the end of a phrase containing a question word. By itself, ก็ได้ means "is fine" or "can also," so combining it with a question word literally expresses that "who is fine" or "where is fine."
You will frequently hear open choices paired with expressions like แล้วแต่ (depending on / up to) or ตามใจ (whatever you want).
| It is up to you. I can choose anyone. | แล้วแต่ คุณ ครับ ผม เลือก ใคร ก็ ได้ |
| This holiday we can go anywhere. | วันหยุด นี้ เรา ไป ที่ไหน ก็ ได้ ค่ะ |
| Whatever you want. I am free anytime. | ตามใจ คุณ ค่ะ ฉัน ว่าง เมื่อไร ก็ ได้ |
Whichever and Whatever
When giving open options about specific objects, use ไหน (which) or อะไร (what) directly after the noun.
- Noun + ไหน + ก็ได้ = "whichever [noun]"
- Noun + อะไร + ก็ได้ = "any [noun]" or "whatever [noun]"
| You can buy whichever outfit you want. | คุณ อยาก ซื้อ ชุด ไหน ก็ ได้ ครับ |
| I can buy any brand, depending on what you like. | ผม ซื้อ ยี่ห้อ ไหน ก็ ได้ แล้วแต่ คุณ ชอบ |
| You can eat any dessert. Whatever you want. | คุณ กิน ของหวาน อะไร ก็ ได้ ครับ ผม ตามใจ คุณ |
You can also use this structure to express that you will "agree" or "yield" (ยอม) to whatever method someone else chooses.
| I am willing to do any method. | ฉัน ยอม ทำ วิธี ไหน ก็ ได้ ค่ะ |
