Expressing Fractions
To express mathematical fractions in Thai, you simply read them out top-to-bottom using specific marker words for the numerator and the denominator. The pattern is:
เศษ + [Numerator] + ส่วน + [Denominator]
Think of เศษ as "numerator" and ส่วน as "over" or "part." For example, one-fourth (1/4) is เศษ หนึ่ง ส่วน สี่.

Market Share and Timeframes
You can use fractions to discuss proportions of a market. When discussing business performance over time, Thai uses ไตรมาส for "quarter" (of a year) and ครอง for "to dominate" or "to hold."

Reading a Balance Sheet
Fractions are commonly used to analyze financial proportions on a งบดุล (balance sheet), such as comparing สินทรัพย์ (assets) and หนี้สิน (liabilities). You will often see the fraction followed by ของ (of) to indicate what the proportion is measuring.
| The balance sheet has many categories of assets and liabilities. | งบดุล มี สินทรัพย์ และ หนี้สิน หลาย ประเภท ครับ |

Changing Values and Costs
When analyzing corporate performance, fractions help quantify changes. Place the fraction immediately after direction verbs like เพิ่ม ขึ้น (increase) or ลด ลง (decrease) to state exactly how much a มูลค่า (value) or ต้นทุน (cost) has changed.
| The company's value increased by three-eighths. | มูลค่า ของ บริษัท เพิ่ม ขึ้น เศษ สาม ส่วน แปด ครับ |
