The Lost and Found
When navigating a lost and found department, the key word to know is หาย (lost / to disappear).
| This is the lost and found department. | ที่นี่ เป็น แผนก ของ หาย ครับ |
Looking vs. Finding
In Thai, looking for something (หา) and actually finding it (เจอ) are distinct concepts. To indicate that a search was successful, use เจอ as a resultative verb. It is placed after the action verb and the object you are looking for.
| I found this department already. | ผม หา แผนก นี้ เจอ แล้ว ครับ |
If you have lost something, you will need to report (แจ้ง) it to an officer.
| I want to report a lost item. | ฉัน อยาก แจ้ง ของ หาย ค่ะ |
| Did you find the wallet? | คุณ หา กระเป๋าสตางค์ เจอ ไหม คะ |
To indicate that you searched but failed to find the item, negate the result. Place ไม่ right before เจอ.
| I cannot find the glasses. | ผม หา แว่นตา ไม่ เจอ ครับ |
Dropping Items
The verb หล่น means to drop or to fall. When you accidentally drop an item yourself, Thai uses a causative structure: ทำ (to make/do) + Object + หล่น.
| I dropped the bag here. | ฉัน ทำ กระเป๋า หล่น ที่นี่ ค่ะ |
Alternatively, you can just state that the item fell on its own by placing หล่น directly after the object.
| Your ring fell at the market. | แหวน ของ คุณ หล่น ที่ ตลาด ครับ |
Providing Details
To help locate your item, you will need to describe its appearance (ลักษณะ) or provide specific details (รายละเอียด).
| What does the wallet look like? | ลักษณะ ของ กระเป๋าสตางค์ เป็น ยังไง คะ |
| Please give me the details of the glasses. | ขอ รายละเอียด ของ แว่นตา หน่อย ค่ะ |
