Expressing Preference with ชอบ ... มากกว่า

To state that you like one thing more than another, use the verb ชอบ (to like) and the comparison word มากกว่า (more than).

  • ชอบ
    • [Preferred Noun] + มากกว่า
      • [Less Preferred Noun]
I like cocoa more than coffee. (male speaker)
ผม　ชอบ　โกโก้　มากกว่า　กาแฟ　ครับ

To emphasize whose preference is being discussed, you can start the sentence with สำหรับ (for / as for).

For me, I like savory food more than dessert. (female speaker)
สำหรับ　ฉัน　ฉัน　ชอบ　ของคาว　มากกว่า　ของหวาน　ค่ะ

Comparing Actions

The same structure applies when comparing actions or activities:

  • ชอบ
    • [Preferred Action] + มากกว่า
      • [Less Preferred Action]
He likes playing tennis more than playing football.
เขา　ชอบ　เล่น　เทนนิส　มากกว่า　เล่น　ฟุตบอล
This holiday, the family likes going on a picnic more than resting at home.
วันหยุด　นี้　ครอบครัว　ชอบ　ไป　ปิกนิก　มากกว่า　พักผ่อน　ที่　บ้าน

When the action is the same for both items, you only need to state the verb once:

I like eating salmon more than chicken, so I accidentally ate it all.
ฉัน　ชอบ　กิน　แซลมอน　มากกว่า　ไก่　ก็เลย　เผลอ　กิน　หมด
My boyfriend likes watching musicals more than rock concerts.
แฟน　ชอบ　ดู　ละคร　มิวสิคัล　มากกว่า　คอนเสิร์ต　ร็อก
