Structuring a Written Text
Formal Thai texts announce their own structure. These are the words that do it — you have met their spoken counterparts long ago:
| written | spoken counterpart | meaning |
|---|---|---|
| หาก | ถ้า | if |
| เนื่องจาก | เพราะ | because, due to |
| แม้ | ถึงแม้ | even, even though |
| นอกจากนี้ | นอกจาก...แล้วยัง | besides this |
| รวมทั้ง | และ...ด้วย | as well as |
| If it rains heavily, the school will close. | หาก ฝน ตก หนัก โรงเรียน จะ ปิด |
Listing
ได้แก่ (namely) introduces a list; เป็นต้น (et cetera) closes an open one; ดังนี้ (as follows) points at what comes next. A written sentence often runs: ผลไม้ไทยมีหลายชนิด ได้แก่ มะม่วง ส้ม เป็นต้น.
| Thai fruit comes in many kinds, namely mangoes and oranges. | ผลไม้ ไทย มี หลาย ชนิด ได้แก่ มะม่วง และ ส้ม |
Carrying a Story Forward
ต่อมา (later on) moves a narrative to its next step, ยังคง (still, continues to) reports an unchanged state, ทั้งนี้ (in this regard) adds a qualification, and ที่สำคัญ (importantly) flags the point that matters most.
