Why is it min instead of mitt or mina?
Possessive words in Swedish must match the noun they refer to. Since bil (car) is an en-word, we use min. If you were talking about an ett-word like ett hus (a house), you would say Huset är mitt. If there were multiple cars, you would use the plural form mina: Bilarna är mina.
Is min the exact same word for both "my" and "mine"?
Yes! Unlike English, Swedish uses the exact same word whether it is placed before a noun or stands completely on its own. So, min bil means "my car", and Bilen är min means "The car is mine".
Could I just say Det är min bil instead to mean the same thing?
You can, but the focus changes slightly. Det är min bil translates to "It is my car," which simply identifies the object. Bilen är min translates to "The car is mine," which puts the emphasis strongly on who owns the car.
