Questions & Answers about Gipsskivorna kostar sextio kronor stycket.
Why does the sentence use the definite form stycket to mean "a piece"?
In Swedish, unit pricing is typically expressed using the definite singular form of the noun without any preposition. Instead of saying "a piece" or "per piece", you use the definite form, which literally translates to "the piece".
Could I say per styck instead of stycket in this sentence?
Yes, per styck is also very common in Swedish and means exactly the same thing. However, using the definite noun stycket as shown here is a very natural and traditional way to state prices.
What words make up the compound gipsskivorna?
It is formed from gips (plaster or gypsum) and skivorna (the boards or sheets). The singular root is en gipsskiva, which is the standard Swedish word for a plasterboard or a sheet of drywall.
I thought en skiva meant a slice, like a slice of bread. Why is it used for drywall here?
While en skiva is often used for a slice of food or a vinyl record, its broader meaning is any flat, relatively thin object. Because of this, it is the standard word for construction boards and panels, such as drywall (gipsskiva) or wooden boards (träskiva).
