Questions & Answers about En hyllning till bruden! Länge leve kärleken!
Why is the verb leve used here instead of the normal present tense lever?
The word leve is in the optative mood, a verb form used to express a strong wish or hope. In modern Swedish, this mood is almost entirely obsolete and only survives in a few fixed, formulaic exclamations like länge leve (long live). Since this is a traditional cheer rather than a statement of fact, the regular present tense lever is dropped in favor of this special form.
Why is the word order länge leve kärleken instead of having the subject first?
This happens because Swedish is a V2 (verb-second) language. Starting the exclamation with the adverb länge forces the verb leve into the second position, pushing the subject kärleken to the end. Furthermore, because this is an ancient fixed phrase, its poetic structure is locked in place, much like the English equivalent 'Long live love'.
Why does Swedish use the definite form kärleken when English just says 'love'?
When talking about abstract concepts in a broad, general sense, Swedish requires the definite form. So while English uses the uncountable bare noun 'love', Swedish uses kärleken (literally 'the love'). You will see this same rule apply to words like livet (life), naturen (nature), and döden (death).
Is till the standard preposition to use after hyllning?
