Questions & Answers about Ofta är det osagda värre än bekymret.
How does det osagda work as a standalone phrase without a noun following it?
In Swedish, you can turn an adjective or past participle into a noun to talk about an abstract concept. By using the neuter definite article det and the definite ending -a, det osagda literally means "that which is unsaid" or "the unsaid thing." You don't need a noun like ordet (the word) after it because the neuter phrase itself fully represents the abstract idea.
Why does the participle osagda end in -a here?
Osagda is the past participle of säga (to say) combined with the negative prefix o-. Because it follows the definite article det, it acts like an adjective in its definite form. Definite adjectives and participles almost always take the -a ending.
Could I use sämre instead of värre here, since both mean "worse"?
Värre is a much better fit for this sentence. While both mean "worse", sämre usually describes a decline in quality (like a worse car or a worse movie). Värre is used when things that are already bad, severe, or serious become more intense, which perfectly describes dealing with abstract problems like bekymret (the trouble).
Why is the definite form of ett bekymmer spelled bekymret and not bekymmeret?
