Questions & Answers about Liggande på båren tackade överlevaren sökhunden.
How does liggande replace a full clause here?
Liggande is the present participle of ligga (to lie). It replaces a full time-clause like Medan hen låg (While they lay). This reduction (satsförkortning) is possible because the person lying down is the exact same person as the subject of the main clause, överlevaren.
Why is the verb tackade placed before the subject överlevaren?
The entire participial phrase Liggande på båren acts as the first block of information in the sentence. Because of the Swedish V2 rule, the main verb tackade must come in the second position, which pushes the subject to the third position.
Would liggande change its ending if there were multiple survivors on the stretcher?
No. Unlike normal adjectives, present participles ending in -ande and -ende are invariable. They do not change to match the gender or number of the noun they describe. It would still be Liggande på båren even if the subject were plural.
How is the noun överlevaren built from its root verb?
The base verb is överleva (to survive). Adding the suffix -are turns it into a person who performs the action, creating en överlevare (a survivor). The final -n is then added to make it the definite form, meaning the survivor.
