Questions & Answers about Vilka pjäxor är skönast till skidresan?
Since ski boots come in pairs, is pjäxor considered a plural-only noun (plurale tantum) like glasögon (glasses)?
No. While often used in the plural because they are worn in pairs, pjäxor has a standard singular form in Swedish: en pjäxa (one ski boot). Because it functions as a regular countable noun here, it simply takes the standard plural question word vilka (which).
Why is the adjective skönast (most comfortable) not written as skönaste to agree with the plural noun pjäxor?
When a superlative adjective is used predicatively (meaning it comes directly after a verb like är rather than right before the noun), it stays in its base superlative form ending in -ast. You only add the -a or -e ending when it is placed directly before the noun, such as in the phrase de skönaste pjäxorna (the most comfortable ski boots).
Why do we use the preposition till (to) instead of för (for) when translating "for the ski trip"?
In Swedish, till is the standard preposition used to express the purpose of an object, an intended destination, or what event an item is meant for. While English uses "for" in this context, Swedish naturally uses till to link the boots to the specific activity they are going to be used for.
Why does skidresan have the definite suffix -an here?
