Questions & Answers about Hon hittade brevväxlingen ur vars sidor sanningen kom fram.
Why does the preposition ur come right before vars?
In formal Swedish, when a relative clause includes a preposition and the possessive relative pronoun vars (whose), the preposition is placed directly before vars and the noun it modifies. The structure ur vars sidor is highly formal. In everyday spoken Swedish, people usually avoid this entirely by rephrasing the sentence.
Could I use från instead of ur here?
You could, but ur is much more descriptive. While från is a general word for from, ur specifically means out of the inside of something. Using ur gives the strong imagery that the truth was extracted from within the very pages themselves.
Does kom fram mean arrived in this context?
No, although komma fram often means to arrive at a physical destination, as a phrasal verb it also means to emerge, appear, or come to light. Context tells us which one applies here: a hidden truth emerges, it does not physically arrive like a train.
How is the word brevväxlingen constructed?
It is a compound noun made up of brev (letter) and växling (exchange). The root verb is att växla, meaning to switch or exchange. Literally translating to the letter exchange, it is the standard Swedish word for correspondence.
