Questions & Answers about Innovationen är användarvänlig. Systemet är dock ganska dyrt.
Why is dock placed after är instead of at the beginning of the sentence?
dock (however) acts as a sentence adverb. In a main clause, sentence adverbs usually come directly after the finite verb to maintain the V2 rule. While you can start a sentence with it (Dock är systemet...), placing it after the verb is very common and sounds natural, just like placing 'however' mid-sentence in English.
Could I use emellertid instead of dock in this sentence?
Yes, you could say Systemet är emellertid ganska dyrt. Both words mean 'however' and follow the exact same word order rules. The main difference is that emellertid is slightly more formal and often preferred in written text, whereas dock is versatile and common in both speech and writing.
Why does dyrt end in a -t while användarvänlig does not?
This is a reminder that adjectives must agree with the gender of the noun they describe. Innovationen is an en-word, so its adjective stays in the base form (användarvänlig). Systemet is an ett-word, so we must add a -t to the adjective dyr, making it dyrt.
How exactly is the compound word användarvänlig formed?
It is formed from användare (user) and vänlig (friendly). When joining them, the final -e of användare is dropped to form the connecting root användar-, resulting in användarvänlig. Dropping the -e is a standard pattern in Swedish when combining words where the first part ends in -are.
