Questions & Answers about Paret planerar att bosätta sig på landsbygden.
Why is sig used after bosätta here?
The verb bosätta sig is a reflexive verb meaning to settle down or take up residence, representing the acquisition of a new state or place. It is built from bo (to live) and sätta (to put or place), so the couple is essentially 'placing themselves to live.' Since the subject is paret (third person), the reflexive pronoun must be sig.
Why do we use the preposition på before landsbygden instead of i?
In Swedish, på is traditionally used with rural areas, islands, and open geographic spaces, reflecting the idea of being out 'on' the open land rather than enclosed 'in' a city (i staden). Therefore, you will almost always use på landsbygden when talking about the countryside.
How is the noun landsbygden constructed?
It is a compound made of land (country or land), a connecting -s-, and bygd (district or settlement). Recognizing bygd is very helpful at the B2 level, as it appears in other geographical terms you will encounter, like glesbygd (sparsely populated area) and hembygd (home district). Here, it is in the definite form, which is required when referring to 'the countryside' in a general sense.
Grammatically, paret means 'the couple'. If we added an adjective like 'young' before it, how would it agree?
