Questions & Answers about Livvakten är alltid vaksam.
Why does livvakten mean "the bodyguard" when liv usually means "life"?
While liv most commonly translates to "life", historically it also referred to the "body" or "waist". So a livvakt is literally a "life guard" or "body guard", protecting someone's physical person.
Is vaksam related to the word vakt (guard) in livvakten?
Yes! Both come from the root verb att vaka, which means to stay awake or keep watch. The suffix -sam forms adjectives and works a bit like "-ful" in English. So vaksam translates well to "watchful" or "vigilant".
Why does alltid come after är in this sentence?
This is a great reminder of the Swedish V2 (verb-second) rule. In a standard main clause, the conjugated verb (är) must be in the second position. Sentence adverbs like alltid (always) or aldrig (never) are placed immediately after it.
How would the adjective vaksam change if there were multiple bodyguards?
Adjectives must agree with the noun they describe. Because livvakten is singular and an en-word, vaksam takes its basic form here. If it were plural (livvakterna), you would add an -a to the end: Livvakterna är alltid vaksamma.
