Questions & Answers about Jag gillar ramen till tavlan.
Why use till here instead of the possessive -s (like tavlans ram)?
You can absolutely say tavlans ram! However, Swedish very often uses till to express that an object physically belongs to, fits into, or is a part of something else. It works just like saying "the frame for the painting" or "the key to the door" in English.
Why are both ramen and tavlan in the definite ("the") form?
When you use till to show possession or a relationship, a strict rule applies: both nouns must be in the definite form. It is always "[the thing] till [the other thing]". This is different from the -s possessive, where the second noun drops its "the" ending.
Is ramen here the same as the Japanese noodle soup?
That is just a funny coincidence! Here, ramen is the definite form of en ram, which means "a frame". (Though if you want to order noodle soup in Sweden, it is also called ramen!)
Does tavlan only refer to paintings?
While it means "the painting" here, en tavla is a versatile word for a flat, often framed surface. It can be a framed photograph, a blackboard, a whiteboard, or even a visual chart.
