Questions & Answers about Tror du på hennes påståenden?
Why does the plural of påstående end in -n here?
The word ett påstående (a claim) is an abstract noun ending in -ende. Neuter nouns (ett words) that end in a vowel belong to the fourth noun group in Swedish, which forms the plural by simply adding an -n. Therefore, ett påstående becomes flera påståenden.
Why do we use på after tror in this sentence?
The verb att tro on its own usually means to think (to have an opinion) or to believe a fact. But when you want to express believing in something, trusting something, or believing a person's words, you must use the phrasal verb att tro på.
Why is påståenden in the indefinite plural form? Doesn't hennes make it specific?
A strict rule in Swedish is that a noun following a possessive word (like hennes, min, or a name with an -s) must always be in the indefinite form. Even though her claims are specific things, we say hennes påståenden instead of the definite form hennes påståendena.
What verb is påståenden related to?
It is formed from the verb att påstå, which means to claim or to assert. Adding the -ende suffix is a common way to turn a verb into a noun representing the action or concept of that verb.
