Questions & Answers about Jag njuter av sällskapet.
Why does sällskapet end in -et? Is there a rule for the gender of words ending in -skap?
sällskap is an ett word, which gives it the -et ending for "the company". A helpful pattern for -skap words: if the word describes a state of being or an abstract relationship (like en vänskap, a friendship), it is usually an en word. If it describes a collective group of people or a concrete noun (like ett sällskap, a party of people), it is usually an ett word.
Why do we need the word av here? Can I just say "Jag njuter sällskapet"?
In Swedish, the verb njuta (to enjoy) almost always pairs with the preposition av when you mention the specific thing you enjoy. Think of it as "I take pleasure from" the company. Without av, the sentence is grammatically incomplete.
Does sällskap mean "company" as in a business, or "company" as in people?
Here it means "company" as in companionship or the presence of people. If you want to talk about a commercial business, you must use a completely different word like ett företag or ett bolag.
How is the sk pronounced in sällskapet?
It is pronounced as a hard sk sound (like in the English word "skip"). The sk combination stays hard here because it is followed by a, which is a "hard" vowel in Swedish. You don't use the soft "sj" sound here.
