Questions & Answers about Tack! Boken är fin.
Why is it boken and not just bok?
In Swedish, you do not use a separate word for "the". Instead, you add an ending to the noun. The word for "a book" is en bok. To say "the book", you attach that en to the end of the word, making it boken.
Why is the word for "nice" fin here and not fint?
Adjectives in Swedish change depending on the gender of the noun they describe. Because bok is an en-word, the adjective keeps its base form, fin. If we were describing an ett-word, like ett hus (a house), the adjective would take a T at the end and become fint.
Does the exclamation Tack! change the word order of the following sentence?
No, it does not. While Swedish normally uses a strict "verb-second" rule, exclamation words like Tack! (Thanks!) or Hej! (Hello!) act independently. The sentence about the book starts completely fresh, with the subject Boken in the first position and the verb är in the second position.
Does fin mean "nice" as in a friendly person, or "nice" as in a good physical object?
