Learn Swedish: Marias klänning är mycket fin. - Maria's dress is very beautiful.

In Swedish, to show that something belongs to someone, you just add an -s directly to the end of the name. Unlike in English, you never use an apostrophe! So Maria's simply becomes Marias.

Why don't we say Marias en klänning or Marias klänningen?

Just like in English, when you use a possessive word (like Marias), you drop the 'a' or 'the' that would normally go with the noun. You just use the base form of the word, so it is simply Marias klänning (Maria's dress).

Since the dress belongs to Maria, does the adjective fin change to match her?

No, adjectives always match the noun being described, not the owner. klänning is an 'en-word', so the adjective stays in its base form, fin. If Maria owned an 'ett-word', like a house (ett hus), the adjective would get a -t ending instead: Marias hus är mycket fint.

Can mycket mean 'much' as well as 'very'?

Yes! The word mycket translates to 'much' or 'a lot' when talking about quantities. But when it is placed directly in front of an adjective like fin, it translates to 'very'.
