Questions & Answers about Är det här Karins klänning?
Why does Karins not have an apostrophe like in English?
In Swedish, you make a name possessive by simply adding an -s to the end without any apostrophe. So "Karin's" becomes Karins.
What happens if a name already ends in an "s", like Lars or Anders?
If a name already ends in an -s, -x, or -z, you don't add an extra -s or an apostrophe at all. For example, "Lars's dress" would just be Lars klänning.
Why is it just klänning and not the definite form klänningen? Aren't we talking about a specific dress?
Yes, but in Swedish, whenever a noun comes directly after a possessive word (like a name with an -s, or a word like min for "my"), it must always be in its basic, indefinite form. So it drops the -en and is just Karins klänning.
Klänning is an en-word, so why do we use the ett-word form det in det här ("this")?
When introducing or pointing something out with "This is..." or "Is this...?", Swedish always uses the neutral det or det här, regardless of the noun's actual gender. You are basically asking "Is this thing here Karin's dress?"
